Capturing the fleeting magic of those first tiny yawns
I see you, mama. I know you are currently navigating that beautiful, blurry haze of sleepless nights, the scent of milk, and the overwhelming wonder of the little soul now sleeping in your arms.
In these early days, time has a strange way of slipping through our fingers. One moment you are admiring their delicate eyelashes, and the next, they have already outgrown those first tiny grows.
It is so tempting to just find “someone with a good camera” to capture this moment quickly. But there is one mistake I see parents make that can be truly heartbreaking – and even risky.
The mistake of choosing a “generalist” over a specialist
The biggest mistake you can make is assuming that all photography is the same. While a wedding or landscape photographer might be incredibly talented, newborn photography requires a completely different set of skills.
Newborns are not just tiny adults. They have fragile neck muscles, developing spines, and they cannot regulate their own body temperature.
I want you to feel completely at ease when you walk into my studio. My job is to ensure you can sit back with a hot cup of tea – perhaps for the first time in days – while I handle everything.
- I provide a curated wardrobe of soft knits and delicate wraps.
- The studio is kept at a specific, cozy temperature for baby.
- I work entirely at your baby’s pace, with plenty of time for feeding and cuddles.
Safety is my absolute priority
When you see those beautiful, “froggie” style poses or babies seemingly suspended in mid-air, please know that these should always be created as composite images.
This means my hands, or an assistant’s hands, are on the baby at all times. I then blend the photos together later in my digital darkroom to create the final, magical look.
I have spent years training with the best in the industry to ensure I understand infant physiology and safe posing. Your baby’s safety and comfort will never be compromised for the sake of a photo.
If your little one is fussy or your toddler is having a bit of a “moment” in the studio, please do not worry. I have seen it all before, and I promise we will still find those quiet, soulful moments amidst the chaos.
A note for the tired Mums
I know you might be feeling self-conscious about the dark circles under your eyes or the way your body has changed. You might be tempted to stay behind the camera rather than in front of it.
But please, stay in the frame. Your baby will one day look at these photos and they won’t see the exhaustion; they will only see the way you looked at them with such fierce, unconditional love.
Whether you are coming to see me from Greenwich, Blackheath, or Hither Green, my goal is to make you feel as beautiful as you truly are. You are doing an incredible job, and these memories deserve to be preserved safely and with heart.
