7 Hidden Dangers of Hiring a Cheap Newborn Photographer

Making memories safely in our corner of South East London

I know exactly where you are right now. You are likely reading this with a sleeping baby in your arms, or perhaps while finally catching five minutes of peace with a cup of tea that has probably gone cold.

It is such a whirlwind, isn’t it? Those first few weeks are a beautiful blur of milky scents, tiny yawns, and that deep, soul-stirring love that takes your breath away.

I know it feels overwhelming to choose a photographer when there are so many options out there. It might be tempting to go for the cheapest price you find on a local Facebook group, but when it comes to your precious new arrival, there are a few things I truly want you to consider before you book.

Why specialist training matters more than a bargain

A camera does not make someone a newborn photographer. Just like you wouldn’t hire a plumber to fix your electrics, newborn photography is a highly specialised skill that requires years of dedicated training.

When you see those beautiful, sleepy poses on my website, they are often the result of “composites.” This means I take two photos and merge them together so that my hands are always supporting the baby.

A cheap or inexperienced photographer might try to “force” a baby into a pose they aren’t ready for. They may not understand the subtle signs of infant distress or how to monitor a baby’s circulation and breathing while they sleep.

I always tell my Greenwich and Blackheath parents that my first job is “baby whisperer,” and my second job is photographer. Your baby’s comfort is my absolute priority – the stunning images are just the lovely result of them feeling safe.

Safety & Comfort (Critical Section)

1. Lack of Safety Training: Many “budget” photographers have never attended a newborn safety workshop. They may not know how to safely support a baby’s heavy head or fragile neck.

2. Temperature Control: Newborns cannot regulate their body temperature well. An expert knows how to keep the studio at the perfect toastiness to keep baby comfortable without overheating them.

3. Poor Hygiene Practices: In my studio, everything is washed in non-bio detergent after every single use. I am fully vaccinated and I never, ever shoot if I am feeling even slightly unwell.

4. Unsafe Props: Cheap props can have sharp edges, be made of splintering wood, or use fabrics that irritate delicate newborn skin. I only use professional, specialist-grade props designed specifically for babies.

5. No Insurance: It isn’t a “fun” topic, but professional insurance is vital. A cheap hobbyist often skips this, leaving you unprotected if an accident were to happen.

6. The “Rush” Factor: A bargain photographer often books too many sessions in a day. Newborns need time. They need breaks for feeds, cuddles, and nappy changes. I only ever book one newborn session a day so we are never, ever rushed.

7. Regret Over Quality: These days go by so fast. If the photos come back blurry, poorly lit, or with “orange” skin tones, you cannot redo the session. That tiny, newborn stage is gone in the blink of an eye.

A Note for Mums and Dads

I know you might be feeling self-conscious. You might feel tired, or like you want to wait until you “lose the baby weight” before getting in the frame.

Please, don’t wait. Your baby will never look at these photos and see your tired eyes or your messy hair.

They will see the way you looked at them with pure adoration. They will see how small they once felt in your arms.

Whether we are in my studio or your home in Hither Green, I promise to make you feel comfortable. I will guide you, I will hold the baby while you have a snack, and I will make sure you feel like the wonderful parent you already are.
