Choosing the right hands for your precious new arrival
Oh, those first few weeks. They are a beautiful, blurry haze of milky breaths, tiny fingernails, and that incredible, heavy-lidded newborn stare.
I know you are exhausted. Between the sleepless nights in Greenwich and the endless nappy changes, the thought of booking a photoshoot can feel like just one more thing on a very long list.
But these moments are so fleeting. Before you know it, those tiny toes will be running across the grass in Blackheath, and these early days will be a soft memory.
It is so tempting to just book the cheapest person you find on social media. But when it comes to your brand new baby, there is so much more at stake than just a pretty picture.
Why specialist experience is the greatest gift you can give yourself
When you hire a professional, you aren’t just paying for a fancy camera. You are paying for peace of mind, expert handling, and a stress-free morning where you finally get to sit down.
I have spent years training in the delicate art of newborn posing and safety. My studio is a sanctuary designed for you to breathe out and just be while I take care of everything.
If you are looking at photographers, please keep these five danger signs in mind to ensure your baby is in the safest possible hands.
1. They don’t mention safety training on their website.
Newborn photography is an unregulated industry, which means anyone can buy a camera and call themselves a professional. If they haven’t invested in specialist safety training, they may not understand how to protect your baby’s delicate airway or circulation.
2. The price seems “too good to be true.”
A professional business has high overheads, including insurance, high-end equipment, and continuous training. If a price is incredibly low, it often means they are cutting corners – and safety or quality is usually the first thing to go.
3. They ask you to hold the baby in “unnatural” poses without support.
Many of those beautiful “froggie” or “hanging” poses you see online are actually composite images. This means a hand was supporting the baby at all times, and it was edited out later. An amateur might try to do it for real, which is incredibly dangerous.
4. Their portfolio looks inconsistent.
If their photos look different in every gallery – some bright, some dark, some blurry – it means they don’t have full control over their equipment. You want to know that the beautiful images you see on their website are exactly what you will receive.
5. They don’t have a plan for “difficult” moments.
Babies cry, they have accidents, and they don’t always want to sleep. A professional will remain calm and patient, using proven settling techniques. If a photographer seems flustered or rushed, it creates a stressful environment for both you and your little one.
Safety & Comfort (Critical Section)
In my studio, your baby’s safety is my absolute priority. Every pose I do is baby-led, meaning if your little one isn’t comfortable, we simply don’t do it.
I use composite editing for any complex poses. This means your baby is always being supported by my hands or yours, and I work my magic in the editing room afterwards.
You don’t need to worry about a thing. If the baby needs a feed, we stop. If they need a cuddle, we wait. I have a full range of beautiful, soft props and tiny outfits right here in South East London, so you don’t even need to pack a bag.
My goal is for you to leave the session feeling more relaxed than when you arrived. You can simply sit back with a cup of tea and watch your beautiful baby being treasured.
A Note for Mums
I know you might feel a bit “undone” right now. Maybe you are worried about the dark circles under your eyes or you don’t feel like your usual self yet.
Please hear me when I say: You are beautiful exactly as you are.
Your baby doesn’t see the tired eyes; they see their whole world. One day, your child will look back at these photos and see the pure, unconditional love in your gaze.
Don’t stay out of the frame. You deserve to be part of your family’s history.
