Protecting your sweet baby while capturing those fleeting first weeks
I know you are exhausted right now. You are probably reading this with a sleeping baby on your chest, nursing a lukewarm cup of tea in your Greenwich home, marveling at how tiny those little fingernails are.
Those first few weeks pass by in a beautiful, sleep-deprived haze. It is so natural to want to freeze these fleeting moments forever, because you already know how quickly they will change.
But in the rush to capture these early days, there is one critical mistake that many well-meaning parents – and even some untrained photographers – make.
The danger of the “perfect” viral photo
When you scroll through Instagram or Pinterest, you see gorgeous images of newborns propped up on their tiny hands, or suspended in beautiful, delicate hammocks.
The big mistake is believing these photos were taken in one single shot without any support.
In reality, many of those complex, gravity-defying poses are actually composites – which means they are two or more photos merged together in Photoshop while a hand safely supports the baby at all times.
Trying to replicate these poses at home without specialist training puts your precious baby at a very real risk of injury or restricted breathing. Your baby’s neck muscles are not strong enough to support their heavy head, and their airways can easily become compromised if their chin drops too close to their chest.
To keep things completely stress-free, my studio in South East London is fully equipped with safe, beautiful wraps and a curated wardrobe. You do not need to worry about buying a single prop or trying to figure out how to pose your baby safely.
Safety & Comfort (Critical Section)
Baby safety must always come first, ahead of any creative vision.
During my sessions, I use gentle, natural poses that respect your baby’s physiology and never force them into uncomfortable positions. If we do a pose that looks like your baby is holding themselves up, my hands, or yours, are always inches away, supporting their head and neck.
Here is how I ensure your baby remains safe and comfortable throughout our time together:
- Never leaving baby unattended on a posing surface for even a split second.
- Maintaining a warm studio temperature so your baby does not get chilled.
- Sanitising all props, wraps, and surfaces thoroughly before you arrive.
- Using composite photography for any complex-looking poses to ensure baby is always supported.
If your little one is fussy, has wind, or just needs a cuddle, we stop immediately. We have plenty of time for feeding, changing, and soothing, so there is absolutely no rush at all. You can sit back, enjoy a hot coffee, and watch me gently soothe your baby to sleep using techniques I have perfected over years of specialist training.
A Note for Mums
Please do not worry about looking tired, or feel like you need to lose the baby weight before you get in front of the camera.
Your baby will look back at these photos in twenty years and only see the warmth in your eyes and how deeply they were loved.
Let me take care of the safety, the lighting, and the gentle posing. You just focus on breathing in that sweet newborn scent and falling in love with your new family.
