Why those first few weeks are precious, but your baby’s safety must come first
Oh, I know exactly how you are feeling right now. You are likely sitting there, exhausted, scrolling through your phone with a sleeping baby on your chest, marveling at how tiny they are.
Those little eyelashes, the soft flaky skin on their ankles, and the way they smell like absolute heaven – it all goes by in a beautiful, fleeting blur.
You want to freeze this moment forever, and you absolutely should. But before you rush to book just any photographer in South East London, we need to talk about the risks of choosing the wrong one.
The real danger of the “inexpensive” portrait hunt
Newborn photography is not like any other kind of portraiture. It is a highly specialized, unregulated industry, which means anyone with a camera can set up a website.
When you book a photographer, you are trusting them with your most precious, fragile possession. A true professional knows how to prepare you for the session so it feels like a calm morning out, not a stressful chore.
For example, I always suggest feeding your little one about twenty minutes before you arrive at my Greenwich studio, so they are sleepy and content.
You also do not need to worry about buying expensive outfits that they will wear once. I provide a beautifully curated studio wardrobe filled with soft, neutral knits and organic wraps, so you can just turn up and let me handle the rest.
Safety & Comfort (Critical Section)
Baby safety must always be the absolute priority.
Many of those adorable, sleepy poses you see online – like the baby resting their chin in their hands – are actually composite images. This means a hand is supporting the baby’s head at all times, and the hand is later edited out in Photoshop.
An untrained photographer might try to force your baby into these positions without support, which is incredibly dangerous for their fragile neck and spine.
In my studio, I let your baby guide the session, and I will never, ever force a pose.
If your baby cries, we stop for a cuddle and a feed. If your toddler has a meltdown, we play a game.
I run the session entirely at your baby’s pace, so you can sit back with a hot cup of tea and actually breathe.
A Note for Mums
Please hear me when I say this: you do not need to wait until you “feel like yourself again” to be in these photographs.
I know you are tired, and your body has just done the most miraculous, challenging thing. But your baby will not look back at these photos and notice your postpartum curves or the dark circles under your eyes.
They will only see the fierce, tender love in your eyes.
I will guide you into the most flattering, gentle angles, using soft Greenwich park light or warm studio tones. Let me worry about the lighting and the angles – you just focus on loving your baby.
