Why Letting Your Newborn Sleep In The Car Ruins Photos

Understanding the delicate rhythm of your tiny new addition

You have managed the impossible. You packed the changing bag, put on real clothes, and safely strapped your precious new baby into their car seat.

As you drive through Blackheath or head down toward my cozy Greenwich studio, you peek in the rear-view mirror and see it: total, blissful silence. Your newborn is fast asleep.

It feels like a victory, doesn’t it? But as tempting as it is to let them snooze, that quick car nap can actually turn our dreamy newborn session into a bit of a struggle.

The secret behind newborn sleep (and how the car seat tricks us)

Car sleep is what I like to call “motion sleep.” The gentle hum of the engine lulls your baby into a light, shallow nap rather than the deep, restorative sleep we need for photography.

When we arrive at the studio and transfer baby out of their car seat, that light sleep is instantly broken. Because they just had a quick 15-minute top-up of energy, they often wake up alert, a little disoriented, and delightfully stubborn!

To get those timeless, deeply sleepy newborn poses, try your best to keep baby awake on the drive over. Have your partner sit in the back to tickle their tiny toes, sing softly, or gently chat to them.

When you arrive, we will feed baby right here in the warm studio. A full tummy combined with our gentle white noise and cozy room temperature will slide them straight into that dreamy, deep sleep naturally.

You do not need to worry about a thing. I provide all the wraps, soft blankets, and delicate outfits, so all you have to do is sit back and sip a warm cup of tea.

Safety & Comfort

Your baby’s safety and well-being are at the very heart of everything I do. I am fully trained in specialized newborn handling, and I will never force a baby into a pose.

When a baby is in a deep, relaxed sleep, their muscles naturally melt into those curled, womb-like poses safely and comfortably. Trying to pose an alert or overtired baby who was woken up from a car nap can cause them frustration, and their comfort always comes first.

If your baby is fussy or takes a while to settle, please remember that I operate entirely on baby time. We will take as many breaks for cuddles, feeds, and soothing as your little one needs.

A Note for Tired Parents

I know how exhausted you are right now. The early days of parenthood are an emotional, beautiful blur of night feeds, endless laundry, and marveling at how something so small can hold your whole heart.

Just getting out of the house and driving across South East London to see me is a huge milestone! Please do not panic if your baby does drift off in the car despite your best efforts.

My studio is a completely stress-free sanctuary. Together, with a little time and plenty of patience, we will capture those fleeting details you never want to forget.
