Stop Dressing Your Baby in Outfits for Newborn Photos

Why less really is more when capturing those first few weeks

I know how tempting it is. You spent months nesting, carefully folding those miniature rompers, tiny dungarees, and sweet little collared shirts into nursery drawers.

They look utterly adorable on the hanger. But when it comes to your professional newborn session, I am going to gently ask you to leave them in the wardrobe.

Right now, you are living in a hazy bubble of milky feeds, broken sleep, and endless cuddles. Those tiny back rolls, flaky newborn ankles, and soft wrinkles on their wrists disappear so quickly. My goal is to capture your baby exactly as they are right now, before this fleeting stage slips away.

The problem with “proper” clothes on tiny bodies

Even “first size” or “tiny baby” outfits rarely fit a brand-new baby properly. Stiff fabrics, buttons, and collars tend to bunch up around their chin, completely hiding their delicate neck and sweet little cheeks.

Every time baby moves, the fabric shifts and swallows them whole. Instead of looking at your baby’s features, your eye is immediately drawn to a rumpled cardigan or a bunched-up waistband.

Here is why we keep things simple in my studio:

  • Baby stays settled: Stripping baby down and dressing them in multiple stiff outfits will almost certainly wake them up and make them fussy.
  • Timeless over trendy: A simple wrap or bare skin never goes out of style, meaning your portraits will look just as classic in thirty years.
  • Every detail is celebrated: Soft wraps allow us to gently showcase those delicious squishy legs, peeling toes, and sleepy yawns.

Don’t worry, I’ve got you covered. You do not need to go shopping or stress about what to buy before you arrive. My Greenwich studio is fully stocked with bespoke, breathable wraps, delicate knit layers, and organic textures made specifically for newborn skin.

Safety & Comfort (Critical Section)

Your baby’s safety, warmth, and comfort are at the very heart of everything I do. As a specialist newborn photographer, I have spent years training in safe handling, newborn physiology, and soothing techniques.

A warm baby is a content baby. The studio is kept comfortably warm, and we use soft, secure wraps that mimic the gentle compression of the womb. This makes baby feel completely safe and supported, helping them drift into that deep, restful sleep.

Your baby’s comfort and safety will always dictate the flow of our session.

I never force a pose, and we take all the time your little one needs. If they need a feed, a nappy change, or just a long cuddle, the clock stops. You can sit back on the sofa with a hot cup of tea while I safely settle and care for your little love.

A Note for Tired Parents

If you are packing a giant bag the night before your session, please stop and take a deep breath.

You do not need to worry about ironing tiny shirts, matching socks, or finding miniature shoes. In fact, if you turn up to my studio with your baby in a simple zip-up sleepsuit, you have done everything right.

Bringing a new life into the world is exhausting work, and you are doing an incredible job. Let me take the pressure off your shoulders for a morning. All you need to do is show up, relax, and let me preserve these quiet, precious first memories for you.
