Take a deep breath, mama – let’s talk about those precious first days
If you are reading this while balancing a cup of tea on your baby bump, or holding a sleepy fresh newborn on your chest, welcome. I know how overwhelming this season can feel, but I promise you, I’ve got you.
Those early days in the newborn fog pass in a heartbeat. Before you know it, those tiny flaky ankles, sleepy yawns, and soft velvety shoulders transform into rolling toddlers.
Capturing these fleeting details is so important, but choosing the right person to handle your brand new baby can feel daunting. Whether you are walking through Greenwich Park dreaming of your arrival, or sitting in your Hither Green nursery, here is what you need to know before you book.
How to choose the right photographer (without the stress)
When booking your newborn session, you want an experience that feels like a quiet, comforting breath of fresh air. You do not need to add more to your already overflowing to-do list.
Here are a few quick things to look for when planning your session:
- Book during pregnancy, but keep it flexible. I always reserve time around your due date, because babies rarely arrive on schedule.
- Look for timeless simplicity. Heavy props and bright costumes date quickly, whereas soft textures and natural light put the focus entirely on your baby.
- Ask what you need to bring. In my Greenwich studio, I provide a curated newborn wardrobe, cozy wraps, and delicate blankets so you don’t have to shop for a thing.
The best sessions are the ones where you simply show up, drop your bags, and let someone else take care of everything.
Safety & Comfort (Critical Section)
Your baby’s physical safety and emotional comfort are my absolute top priorities. A specialist newborn photographer is not just a person with a camera; they are trained in infant physiology and safe handling.
Never trust a photographer who forces a baby into a pose. Every pose should be baby-led, natural, and dictated by your little one’s flexibility and mood.
For those beautiful “upright” or trickier poses you see online, a professional will always use composite images. This means my hands are on your baby at all times for support, and two photos are digitally merged later for safety.
If your baby cries or needs a feed, we stop. There is never any rush, and I build plenty of extra time into every session so you can sit back, rest your feet, and enjoy a quiet warm drink while I work.
A Note for Mums
I know you might be feeling exhausted, sore, and unsure about being in front of the camera right after giving birth.
Please, please step into those photos anyway.
Years from now, your child will not look at these pictures and notice your postpartum tiredness or the soft swell of your belly. They will only see how safe they felt in your arms, and how intensely you loved them from the very start.
