Why Your Baby’s Safety is Always My Very First Priority
Those first few weeks with your brand new baby are such a delicate, hazy dream. Between the midnight feeds, the sleepy yawns, and those impossibly tiny toes, you just want to freeze time before it slips away.
I know how tempting it is to search online, grab a woven basket, and try to recreate sweet newborn poses at home. But as a mum and a trained newborn specialist here in Greenwich, I want to share something very close to my heart.
Your baby’s comfort and safety must always come before any photograph.
The 5 Dangerous Mistakes to Avoid (And What to Do Instead)
1. Forcing unsupported poses (like the “froggy” pose)
Those adorable upright poses where baby rests their chin on their hands look sweet, but a newborn baby can never support their own head. Professional photographers create these images as safe “composites,” combining two separate photos while a parent holds the baby’s head secure at all times. Never attempt this pose alone at home.
2. Using unstable or unsafe props
Glass bowls, tall vintage crates, or lightweight baskets that can tip over are major hazards for a wriggly newborn. In my studio, every single prop is heavily weighted at the bottom, soft-lined, and tested for complete stability.
3. Ignoring room temperature and draughts
Newborns cannot regulate their own body temperature easily. Placing an unclothed baby near an open window or directly in front of a heater can quickly lead to distress. Keep the room consistently warm (around 24-26°C) and completely draught-free.
4. Pushing through when baby shows stress cues
If your baby is rooting, sighing heavily, or stiffening their muscles, forcing a pose is unsafe. I always work on baby-led time. If your little one needs a feed, a cuddle, or a nappy change, that is our absolute top priority.
5. Trying to do it all yourself while exhausted
The fourth trimester is exhausting enough without worrying about camera settings, lighting, and spotters. Let an experienced professional take that weight off your shoulders while you sit back and rest.
Safety & Comfort Always Comes First
When you step into my cosy studio space serving families across Greenwich, Blackheath, and Hither Green, you can take a deep breath and relax. I am fully trained in gentle newborn handling, safe positioning, and baby cue recognition.
Every wrap is washed in sensitive detergent, every pose is anatomically safe, and I never force a movement. If your baby wants to stretch out or sleep on their back, we capture them exactly as they are happiest.
I gently guide the entire session so you can put your feet up, sip a warm drink, and simply enjoy watching your baby.
A Note for Tired New Parents
I see you, mum and dad. You are running on very little sleep, and you are doing an incredible job.
Please don’t worry about whether your baby will “behave” or if you feel unprepared. You don’t need to be rested or photo-ready to capture these tender moments.
You just bring your gorgeous baby, and I will take care of every single detail.
